Music Sunday - June 18, 2017
10 AM, Union Congregational Church will present two marvelous contemporary choral works, A Little Jazz Mass by Bob Chilcott, and Gospel Magnificat by Robert Ray. Jazz Mass successfully brings together two very diverse traditions-the Latin mass and the jazz idiom-in an expressive and unforced way. The musical moods range from jazz lullaby to blues inflected to driving swing, reminiscent of the work of the vocal group The Manhattan Transfer. Gospel Magnificat is an invigorating and powerful musical setting, guaranteed to thrill listeners. It is an exuberant song of praises, and will feature a former member of Union, soprano Janet Valdes-Dapena, as soloist with the Sanctuary Choir. Both works will be accompanied by the Union Band, including world-class jazz artists Eric Olsen on piano and keyboards, Ratzo Harris on bass, and Tim Horner on drums. Two musical treats for the entire family!
Praising God Through Song
Music is a big part of who we are. The Sanctuary Choir is here each Sunday morning at the 10 AM service. The Children’s Choir and Youth Choir also share their talents once a month or so. Bell Choirs also enhance our worship a few times a year with the UCC Ringers, an adult choir, and the Key of C, our youth choir. Solos and small ensembles also spring up under the guidance of our Music Director. We are fortunate to have talented congregants willing to share what God has blessed them with. Jazz, gospel, and traditional hymns are sung during the worship service.
