Union Cong Discusses: The Sum of Us (Guild Room)

The Racial Justice Ministry Team is sponsoring a 2-session book discussion of The Sum of Us: What Racism Costs Everyone and How We Can Prosper Together by Heather McGhee, in advance of the townwide Open Book/Open Mind program: Heather McGhee in conversation with Michelle Alexander (free with registration) on October 13.

The book traces the history of how some communities, faced with integration, chose instead to defund, eliminate, and ultimately privatize public goods such as public swimming pools. But there is a better, more hope-filled way: to grow the pie to benefit everyone and collect the Solidarity Dividend.

Join Union members and friends for pizza and discussion of key book topics (summary sheets available for download in advance) and personal reflection on September 29 and October 6 from 7 pm – 8:30 pm in the Main Building. Discussion topics will be different each week, so please plan to attend one or both sessions! Please RSVP here so we can be sure to have enough pizza. This is an intergenerational event for Middle Schoolers through Adult.

Many of you already have a copy of the book. If you don’t yet have a copy, feel free to pick one up (it’s available in both adult and young adult versions) from your local library or favorite book vendor or reach out to Ina Isobe (ina.isobe@gmail.com) for a church library copy.
